Trailer Roundup: Guardians and Expendables

Guardians of the Galaxy International Trailer

This latest trailer is made up of lots of new footage, and shows off the impressive visuals, scope, and sense of humor in Marvel's next film. Most enjoyable is watching the banter and bickering between Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Rocket Raccoon (a CGI Bradley Cooper). In fact, the marketing materials seem to be positioning Rocket Raccoon as the stand out character, delivering both action and humor. This trailer just adds to my excitement for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, which comes out August 1, 2014.

The Expendables 3 New Trailer

Now this is more like it! I have to admit that I found both The Expendables 1 and 2 to be a little boring. The novelty of seeing so many 80's action stars together, calling back to old catch phrases wore off pretty quickly for me. But this trailer looks like a lot of fun. Much of the existing cast returns, along with new additions: Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, and more. Hopefully this will be an action-packed, last hurrah for Stallone and co. The Expendables 3 comes out August 15, 2014.

Check back next week for another Trailer Roundup!

Trailer Roundup: The Boxtrolls and The Interview

This week brings us Laika's latest stop-motion film and Seth Rogen and James Franco's newest comedy.

New International Trailer for The Boxtrolls

This trailer shows off the most plot we've seen yet from the movie, but fails to live up to the heights of the amazing initial teasers released (here and here). The Boxtrolls is hand-made by Laika studios, which has an amazing track record of critically acclaimed, forward thinking stop-motion films (Coraline, Paranorman). This trailer shows the incredible craftsmanship and design that goes into these films, giving us glimpses of the big bad villains and the heartwarming story about an unconventional family. I can't wait to see The Boxtrolls when it comes out September 26, 2014.

First Trailer for The Interview

This trailer shows Seth Rogen (Neighbors) and James Franco (This is The End) attempting to assassinate Kim Jong Un when they go to North Korea to interview him. Directed by Seth Rogen and Seth Goldberg (the team that directed This is The End) this trailer shows that perhaps the concept is funnier than the execution. Then again, it didn't seem to be trying too hard to be funny, as much as it was meant to establish a dark comedic atmosphere in which Franco and Rogen can be free to improvise (what I'm sure will be) hilarious content. Because the movie has so much potential, hopefully we will see more funny content in the promotional material before The Interview comes out October 10, 2014.

First Trailer for Birdman

Our final trailer is for an upcoming dark comedy where Michael Keaton (Batman) plays a washed up actor famous for playing a famous superhero. He must put his ego aside when he tries to recapture his former glory with a broadway play based on the superhero movie. The film is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (Babel) and also stars Edward Norton (Fight Club) and Emma Stone (Easy A). The visuals look pretty inventive, matching a unique visual style with a tone that suggest things will get out of control pretty quickly. Though I hadn't heard of the film before today, this trailer made me very excited for the movie. Birdman comes out October 17, 2014.

Trailer Roundup: More Planet of the Apes and A Million Ways to Die

This week brings us motion-capture apes, the dangers of the Wild Wild West, and much more.

New Trailer: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This new trailer features a lot more footage of the motion-capture apes, which I think are some of the best works if CGI I've seen. Directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), the movie stars Andy Serkis (Gollum from Lord of the Rings) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight). The movie seems to balance drama focused on the apes' society with the larger action sequences. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comes out July 11, 2014.

New Red Band Trailer: A Million Ways to Die in the West

This funny new trailer does its best to make the upcoming Western comedy feel modern. With California Love playing in the background, we see plenty of physical jokes of various levels of maturity. Directed by, and starting, Seth Macfarlane (Ted), the movie also stars Charlize Theron (Prometheus) and Liam Neeson (Taken) as the villain. The absurd, anything-goes sense of humor, along with some cameos not shown in this trailer, have me cautiously optimistic that this could be as funny, if not funnier than Ted. A Million Ways to Die in the West opens on May 30, 2014.

Also new this week, a new trailer for Disney's adaptation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and Nicolas Cage's new thriller, Rage.
